1100s- medieval theatre

this included miracle and mystery plays and later morality plays

this is the oldest surviving form of Japanese theatre it combines music acting and dancing to display Buddhist themes 



1500s-1700s- commedia dell/arte (italian theatre)

improvised performances in masks based on sketches and scenarios 



1560- renaissance set design

Henry VIII transformed some of his tennis courts into indoor theatres

most of his actors were employed by royalty
